Like most modern-day holidays, Mother’s Day has roots that reach deep into Pagan legend and lore. Many of the stories were lost to the ages, but we know that sometime in the 6th century BC, the inhabitants of Ancient Greece hosted celebrations to honor their Mother Goddess, Rhea. The name, ‘Rhea,’ predates language and even humans, but historians agree that there is only one translation—Earth.

As an Earth Goddess, Rhea is synonymous with Gaia. She is the mother to gods and mortals, and a fierce protector of children. Her goal is to teach her ever-growing family the proper way to care for and preserve Earth’s bounty.

Around 200 BC, her spirit was adopted into the Roman pantheon and she received a new name—Kybele. The celebration of the Great Mother evolved once again in the 1600s when Christian leaders in England decreed a day to honor their holy matron, Mary, mother of Christ. This holiday was eventually expanded to include all mothers and mother figures throughout society.

As a nod to Rhea, Gaia, Mother Nature, and all the maternal archetypes that help shape our world, we’ve compiled a list of ways to show love to the mystic mama in your life.

Say it with Words:

Ever wonder why cards go hand-in-hand with Mother’s Day? Despite popular belief, it’s not a ploy by greeting card companies, but a tradition. Mother’s Day gifts have become extravagant over the years, but historically most children shared handwritten notes and candies on this holiday.

A Relaxing Night In:

Ask most mothers what they want on their special day, and they’ll say a quiet evening with no distractions. Make their wish come true by setting the mood for a ritual bath. Gather some bath bombscandlessalts, and leave them alone to recharge. It’s that simple.

Something for a Rainy Day:

Next to a relaxing bath, a day dedicated to reading feels pretty darn luxurious. There’s nothing quite like a good book to unwind and get those creative juices flowing.

Plus, gifting books is a surefire way to show someone that you care about their interests outside of their daily routine. If there’s somebody special in your life, but you’re still learning what they’re into, try perusing their current book collection. Stalking a person’s bookshelf is one of the easiest ways to get to know them on a deeper level.

Keep in mind—even if her bookcase is already full, she can always make room for one more.

Encourage her Intuitive Side:

Have you ever heard someone say that it’s bad luck to buy a deck for yourself? We have. We don’t believe the rumors, but if you know someone who’s shown an interest in divination but has yet to pull the trigger, gifting them their first tarot deck is a compassionate way to show support.

Choosing a deck is like choosing jewelry—it’s personal. Spend ample time looking over your options, and if you can’t decide, you can always go the safe route. Purchase a gift card and wrap it in an altar cloth that they can use during readings. You’ll be supporting their craft and encouraging them to select a deck that speaks to the heart.

Restock the Home Apothecary:

Foragers, wildcrafters, and Earth-spirited humans know that one can never have too many teasherbs, and spices. Not to mention cute little jars to put them in. Restocking or starting a home apothecary for the one that you love is a simple way to bond with the alchemist and kitchen witch in your life.

Spoil Her for Months to Come:

If your mystic mama likes surprises, she’ll be overjoyed when you tell her that she’ll be receiving a monthly present in the mail. Whether she’s a tea addict or moon worshipper (or a bit of both), we have a subscription box that she’ll fall in love with. You can order a box as a one-time purchase or subscribe to a 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month delivery schedule to indulge her for the rest of the year and into the next.
