A Celtic Mother Goddess of the wild, Danu was considered by many to be the first ancestor of Ireland—the breast from which all Gods suckled.
As the Mother of the Gods, Danu was the primordial creatrix—the divining force from which sprang all magic and life.
Known by many names (including Dana and Danann), Danu is most famously attributed as being the mother-teacher of the Tuatha de Danann (which quite literally translates to Tribe of Danu)—an ancient magical race and the original inspiration behind the faery folk.
As a great mysterious figure, not much is concretely known about Danu. Some say she was the womb that birthed the Dagda (the father-king of the Tuatha de Dannan), while others say he was not her son but her divine consort. And other stories paint her as the lover of Bile—the God of light and healing. And it is from this union, they say, that the Dagda came to be. But which story is true remains to be seen.
Now, there’s some debate as to whether or not Danu is also the Goddess Anu—the Celtic Earth Goddess of cattle, prosperity, and death. For she is also painted as the Mother of the Gods and their names are often used interchangeably among mythologists.
From what little we know for certain of Danu, we can see that she was a great primordial force of creation—the wild mother nature that was there at the beginning of times, and will surely be there at the end.
