A Hindu Goddess of wisdom and art, Saraswati was a being of great primordial purity—a divine flowing force of knowledge and beauty.
With her name “saras” meaning to flow, and “wati” meaning woman, Saraswati was a Goddess closely tied to the river of rivers—the Sarasvati River. They say that in the beginning she was first considered to be a great river deity—the ultimate feminine force of consciousness that flowed through the lands.
And just like a river, Saraswati was thought to be a powerfully purifying force—taking the form of knowledge and wisdom so profound that it purified the mind.
Along with Parvati and Lakshmi, Saraswati formed a power known as the Tridevi—or Holy Trinity—representing the three vital aspects of the Goddess energy. Together they helped create, maintain, and regenerate the forces of the universe—keeping balance and order among all.
Saraswati is considered to be the mother of the Vedas—ancient Hindu texts containing great spiritual knowledge. They say that the reason she’s often depicted with four arms is to represent the four Vedas—the Rigveda (book of hymns), the Samaveda (book of melodies), the Yajurveda (book of rituals), and the Atharvaveda (book of spells).
As a Goddess of education and the arts, Saraswati was a deeply wise and fertile being—a lover, a creatrix, and an inspiratrix all in one. Her divine knowledge swept through the lands and brought enlightenment to areas of darkness. Her music and beauty uplifted spirits and inspired creative hearts aplenty.
And while there is so much that could be said about this Goddess beautiful and divine, at her core she was a great and purifying force: the rushing swell of humanity’s creative and knowing tides.
