An Egyptian Goddess of war, Sekhmet was a fearsome and unflinching force—a prolific warrior and huntress well-known (and well-feared) across the lands.

Often depicted as a lioness, or a woman with the head of a lion, Sekhmet’s appearance mirrored the ferocity inside her heart. She was a Goddess most wild—often shown dressed in red to signify her insatiable bloodlust.

While her name means, “She Who is Powerful”, Sekhmet’s reputation also lended her to other titles such as, “Mistress of Dread”, “Lady of Slaughter”, and “One Before Whom Evil Trembles.”

It is said this ferocity of hers began when her father, the great sun God Ra, became angry with his people—for they had become deeply disobedient. And it was from this wrath that the Eye of Ra was formed—a fierce vehicle for vengeance, made of the daughters of Ra, with their only focus being their father’s vengeance.

And it is said that Sekhmet took to this quite well—she gleefully ravaged the lands and filled the streets with blood—far beyond what Ra had ordered.

And upon seeing the carnage his daughter’s great wrath had enacted, Ra knew he must do all that he could to calm her down.

So, the great God had poured beer into the Nile, and stained it blood-red with pomegranate juice. And Sekhmet, thinking it was blood, drank the whole river down—becoming so intoxicated that she fell asleep for days.

And when she awoke, Sekhmet had calmed.

And balance was finally restored once more.

Sekhmet, although a fierce and frightening Goddess, was more than just a brutal savage force.

She was also the healing that came after the wrath.

The protection inside the violent force.

The brave warrior at the front of battle.

Sekhmet was violence and ferocity and a deeply protective spirit.

She was the essence of vengeance—in both its brutality, and deep, undying love.
